The World Health Organisation1 has called on governments to ban all tobacco advertising2. The appeal was issued to mark the UN Agency's global Anti-smoking Day. The WHO says restrictions3 already introduced are not enough to protect young people from increasingly sophisticated marketing4. From Geneva, Imogen Foulkes reports.
The WHO's survey revealed that most people start smoking before the age of 18, and almost a quarter of new smokers5 are under 10 years old. To protect them, the WHO says, a total ban is necessary. No tobacco advertising on bill boards, magazines, television, radio, the Internet or in films and no tobacco sponsoring of sporting events.
An airliner6 has crashed on landing in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, killing7 at least 5 people. Dozens more were injured when the Airbus A320 overshot the runway and crashed down in back when it veered8 onto a street.
