As the increasing pressure to reach a truce1 in the Gaza strip ,along the lines of a France-Egyptian proposal,the U.S Secretary of the State .Condoleezza Rice says that she has been in close discussion not only with her Arab colleagues but also with Israeli ,on the need to move the inititative forward .The plan is also being discussed at the U.N Security Council .France says the plan aims to create a ceasefire ,stop the smuggling2 the weapon into Gaza and lift the Israeli blocklade of the territory .Janomy Bonn reports
The end may not be in sight yet, but there are now indications of what the two sides want from a ceasefire .Israeli has demanded the Hamas rocket attacks ,and international verifiable ways of stopping Hamas rearming .A Hamas spokeman reached by the BBC on the phone this afternoon says that Israeli has to stop the shooting first and open up it border crossing with Gaza to lift the blockalde .Then,he said , Hamas will sit down to talk about something more long term .So at the moment the two versions do not match.
As the diplomatic efforts continue , Israel has resumed its attack on the Gaza strip .It follows three hours suspension , intending to allow the distribution of essential supplies to the population . Israel has said that pause will be observed daily, but the United Nations agency looking after the Palestinians called it insufficient4 .
Russia and Ukraine have invited the European Union to see for itself which country is to be blamed for the cutting gas supplies that is pumped Slovakia to declare a state of emergency ,and Bulgaria a crisis .Ukraine wants EU monitors to confirm Russia's enegry Gasprom is sending no gas down the pipeline5 .James Rodgers reports from Moscow
Russia's dispute with Ukraine is having ever more serious consequences for gas supplies to Europe .Now Gasprom ,Russia's giant gas company ,says it is suspending all delivery via Ukraine .Russia had accused Ukraine of stealing gas which was supposed to be sent on to Europe customers .Ukraine denies that ,and says Russia has already cut off supplies .But it is not just around about gas ,Ukrain searches for close ties to the west ,to NATO in particular has angered Russia .
The Newly elected president of Ghana John Atta Mills has been sworn in at the ceremony of the independence square in Accra. Dublin crowds packed the square breaking the areas reserving for VIPs , Will Ross reports from Accra.
In front of tens of thousands of people at Ghana's Indepedence Square ,John Atta Mills was sworn in office and then given 21-gun salute6 .In his first address as a president ,the 64-year-old spoke3 a new door in Ghana ,and promised to lead an open and honest government .There were loud cheers when he thanks the men he narrowly beaten the election .The fact that Akufo-Addo attended the inauguration7 is sign that Ghana has relative mature democracy and is a long way ahead of many other African countries.

Retired9 general Mehmood Ali Durrani has been summarily dismissed as a National Security Advisor ,even as tensions with neighouring India over th Mumbai's killing10 rise again .A statement from Prime Minister's office said that he was sacked for his irresponsibly behaviour for not taking Prime Minister and other state codes into confidence ,and a lack of coordination11 on matters of national security .Nothing more specific was said ,but earlier the government was finally forced to admit for the first time that the Ajmal Kasab, the one gunman who suvived the Mumbai's event , is from this country .He is a Pakistani ,the Information Minister told the BBC ,adding the investigation12 were continuing.
The President-elect Barack Obama has joined President Bush and three other suviving U.S presidents for lunch .In its first meeting of this kind for a generation.As he stood in the White House with foremer presidents Carter ,Clition and Geroge Bush senior .Mr Obama described it as anextraordinary gathering13 and said that he wanted to learn from his predecessors14 .President Bush said they all wanted Mr Obama to succeed . Barack Obama has set a massive massive spending program to stimulate15 the U.S economy would be the highest end estimates despite the concern about the ballooning budget deficit16 .He was speaking as figures from the Congressional Budget Office indicated that unprecendent 1.2 trillion dollars deficit for the coming fiscal17 year .
A court case spilled as one of the last Nazi18 war crime trials has been dropped after the judge ruled that the 86 year-old defendant19 , Harry20 Lecbull, was too ill to face the justice .Mr Lecbull has been charged with shooting three cilivians in the Nazi occupied Netherlands when he was allegedly part of Valf Esses Death squad21 .
