LESSON 14 Brave bobby 第十四课 勇敢的波比
Some years ago, a ship bound for China had on board, with other passengers, an officer, his wife, their only child 很多年前，有一艘开往中国的大船，船上有很多游客，船长和妻子有一个独生子
—a little boy five years old, and a large Newfoundland dog called Bobby. --一个五岁的小男孩，和一个在新大陆发现的叫波比的狗狗。
Everybody in the ship liked Bobby, he was so good-tempered and frolicsome1; but the boy was the dog's constant playmate. 每个人都喜欢波比，它非常的温顺又很爱嬉闹。
He was a merry little fellow, and as fond of Bobby as Bobby was of him. 小男孩是波比的忠实玩伴，他就像一个小跟班，像波比爱他一样爱着波比。
One evening while the little boy and the dog were romping2 together, the ship gave a roll, and splash went the child into the sea! 一天晚上，小男孩和波比一起玩的时候，船摇摇晃晃的把小孩甩下了船。
A cry was raised, A hand over! a hand over! 有人大喊：“长官！长官！”
And the brave dog sprang over the side of the ship, clearing it like a greyhound, and swam towards the stern. 勇敢的波比在船舷边跳起来，像灰狗一样游到了船尾。
The little boy's father, half frantic3, leaped with others into the jolly-boat; but it was too dark to see far before them. 男孩的父亲，几近疯狂，和其他人一起登上小艇营救孩子。但是天很黑，很那看清远方的事物。
All gave the child up for lost. 所有人都以为孩子死定了。
At last they heard a splash on the left side of the ship. Pull on, quick! cried the father. 最后，船的左侧传来一声划水声，父亲大喊：“开过去！快点！”
The boat was turned, the men pulled with all their might, and in a moment brave Bobby was alongside, holding up the child in his mouth! 小艇驶近时，所有人都意想不到波比正在船边，用嘴把孩子举高着！
Joy! joy! joy! 大家欢呼雀跃！
The boat was rowed back to the ship; the half-drowned boy soon got better; the parents were delighted; and brave Bobby was caressed4 by all. 小艇驶回了船，差点淹死的孩子很快就恢复过来了，他的爸爸妈妈都很开心，拥抱着勇敢的波比。
At the Cape-of-Good-Hope, the passengers were to be landed. 游客准备在好望角登陆，
The officer got into the boat, with his wife and child; 船长上了小艇，留下自己的妻子和小孩在船上，
but he told the sailors to hold the Newfoundland dog tight by the collar till the boat was some distance from the ship. 但是他要水手开小艇把波比带到离船有些距离的陆地上去，松开它的项圈。
You will then see, said he, what a strong swimmer he is. 他说：“你看！多强壮的一位游泳健将啊！”
Brave Bobby pulled and tugged5 to get loose, but all in vain; for they held him till the boat was near the shore. 勇敢的波比努力拉着自己的项圈，但是一切都徒劳无功，因为他们把它放到了海岸边。
But no sooner did the officer give the signal than the dog was set at liberty, and away he went full dash into the sea. 当船长下令把波比留在海岸上时，波比很快就冲到了海里。
Suddenly the poor animal set up a shrill6 howl, and threw himself out of the water. 突然，可怜的波比一直狂吠，在水里游着。
At first it was thought he had been seized with cramp;but it was worse than that—a shark was after him! 起初它因为痉挛而游不动了，但是更糟糕的是--它的身后紧紧跟着一条鲨鱼！
A shark! a shark! sounded from the boat to the ship. 船员大喊：“鲨鱼！鲨鱼！”
Bobby swam right and left, and dived and doubled, showing his teeth, and never allowing the shark time to turn on his back; 波比像蛇一样左右游动，跳进海里又游出海面，展示自己的虎牙，
without doing which the monster could not bite him. 不让鲨鱼靠近自己，鲨鱼也没有咬到它。
The officer in the boat soon saw that there was little chance of reaching the spot in time to save the dog. 船长很快就注意到了有救波比的机会。
Poor Bobby swam and dodged7, till he was almost tired out. Stop rowing, cried the officer to the men, and turn the boat round. 可怜的波比游啊游，直到精疲力尽。长官下令：”不要前行了，开回去！“
Just at that moment the shark, which had got very close to the dog, turned on his back and opened his horrid8 mouth! 就在此时此刻，鲨鱼非常接近波比，张开了大嘴。
In a moment the water was tinged10 with blood: the horrid jaws11 of the shark were shattered to pieces! 很快水面上血红一片，鲨鱼被分成了碎片。
The men then rowed to the spot where Bobby was swimming about. 人们开小艇回到波比的附近，
The officer pulled the dog into the boat; the child threw his little arms around him; 船长把波比带回船上去。孩子的小手臂拥抱着波比，
and the men in the boat, and the sailors in the ship, cried out with joy, Hurrah12! hurrah! joy! joy! 其他人和船上的水手都在欢呼雀跃：“万岁！万岁！耶！耶！
Bobby is safe! the shark is killed! Hurrah! hurrah! 波比安全无恙！鲨鱼被消灭！万岁！万岁！”
