question: Did Mr. Darcy begin falling in love with Elizabeth in this part?
TEXT
THE ladies of Longbourn soon waited on those of Netherfield. The visit was returned in due form. Miss Bennet's pleasing manners grew on the good will of Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley; and though the mother was found to be intolerable and the younger sisters not worth speaking to, a wish of being better acquainted with them was expressed towards the two eldest1. By Jane this attention was received with the greatest pleasure; but Elizabeth still saw superciliousness2 n. Cats, it must be said, have not done badly. Using guile and seduction they managed to get humans to feed them thus preserving their superciliousness without going hungry. A neat trick. Dogs being guileless signed and delivered. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. ">superciliousness in their treatment of every body, hardly excepting even her sister, and could not like them。
Occupied in observing Mr. Bingley's attentions to her sister, Elizabeth was far from suspecting that she was herself becoming an object of some interest in the eyes of his friend. Mr. Darcy had at first scarcely allowed her to be pretty; he had looked at her without admiration3 at the ball; and when they next met, he looked at her only to criticise4 v. He always picks on small points to criticise. >criticise . But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly5 intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. Of this she was perfectly6 unaware7; -- to her he was only the man who made himself agreeable no where, and who had not thought her handsome enough to dance with.
Notes To Text
1 THE ladies of Longbourn soon waited on those of Netherfield.
They're waiting on my decision.
wait out推迟直至结束为止: 【例】 wait out a war; 直等到战争结束;
waited out the miniskirt craze.
Let's wait up for the stragglers.
比如: I cannot bear it. I cannot put up with it. I want it.
I am looking forward to it.
2,a wish of being better acquainted with them was expressed towards the two eldest.
3 hardly excepting even her sister,
第一种类型为no(not)……no(not)……没有……没有no(not,never )……without……
1.Nuclear war is not at all improbable once these countries get desperate.
2.We never see each other without talking about sports first正译:我们每次见面无不是从谈论体育开始的.
如cannot……too……
此结构中,cannot 也可改用成can hardly ,scarcely ,never ,impossible,而后面的too也可以换成over,enough ,sufficient等。
1.You cannot be too cautious.
2.A man cannot have too many friends.(同上)
在否定词后面的but,具有“which not”,“who not”,“that not”等否定意义,构成前后的双重否定。
cannot + wait +不定式,意为 be eager to “急于做某事”
nothing if not 相当于very much ,extremely ,above all
1.There is no question but he will succeed.
4 Occupied in observing Mr. Bingley's attentions to her sister, Elizabeth was far from suspecting that she was herself becoming an object of some interest in the eyes of his friend.
5, But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes.
〖解析〗no sooner...than:(关联词) 一... 同义as soon as, the moment, on doing
had no sooner done...than一般过去时, 固定用法 (时态结构 : 完成时态 + than + 一般过去时)
He had no sooner arrived than he called me up.
No sooner had he arrived than he called me up(倒装)
就...; 用法同no sooner ... than hardly had sb done (hardly在句首, 要倒装)
