Former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt have returned from their visit to North Korea without securing the release of an American national held in the country.
Richardson told a media briefing at Beijing's airport he was unable to meet with Kenneth Bae, who has been charged with unspecified crimes against the state and has been detained in early November.
"We expressed concern to the North Korean officials about the American detainee. We were informed that his health is good, that the judicial1 proceedings2 would start soon. That is encouraging."
According to North Korea's official news agency KCNA, Bae admitted to the crime and would face legal action.
During their visit, the delegation3 met with Foreign Ministry4 officials, visited the electronic library of Kim Il Sung University and the Korean Computer Center.
During his meeting with North Korean officials, the former New Mexico governor said he not only highlighted the need for humane5 treatment of the detained American, but raised his concern about the north missile launch in December.
