 　　South Korean President-elect Park Geun-hye met with US and South Korean army officials on Friday to ascertain¹ her country's military readiness following North Korea's recent nuclear test.

 

　　"The South Korean government and I will not accept North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons and we will be on high alert² with a strong South Korea - US alliance³."

 

　　North Korea carried out its latest nuclear test earlier this month.

 

　　Park has promised to adopt a more balanced policy towards North Korea.

 

　　Kim Young-kyoo, Professor in the Department of International Studies at Hanyang University in Seoul, says Park's policies towards North Korea are very different from outgoing Presiden Lee Myung-bak's.

 

　　"President-elect Park Geun-hye's policy on North Korea is based on trust and conversation compared to President Lee Myung-bak's policy."

 

　　Park will be sworn in on Monday and become the first female South Korean president.
