Chinese scientists have stepped up monitoring of bird migration1 paths to prevent the deadly H7N9 bird flu strain from spreading.

The move comes as birds in the south have already started to fly north.

According to the China Wildlife Conservation Association, about ten wildlife conservation centers across China have started monitoring the migration paths of birds.

Xiao Jinggui, a bird expert, said the bird flu virus could infect many wild birds, especially migratory2 waterfowls.

Xiao called for people to stay away from injured and dead birds and report the discovery of such birds to relevant authorities.

Experts earlier said migratory birds may have carried the H7N9 avian influenza3 virus into China.

Harsher Housing Rules Increase False Divorces

Harsher rules aimed at cooling the property market have triggered a rise in false divorce in China's big cities, in an attempt to avoid higher down payments or property taxes.

Chen Ru, an official with the marriage registration4 office in Beijing's Haidian district, said March was quite unusual, compared with previous months, as more couples got divorced.

In Tianjin, 300 couples registered for divorce in one day in March, compared with the average daily figure of 100 divorces.

The State Council, China's cabinet, announced five property control policies in February and brought in the restrictions5 on March 1.

The policies include a 20 percent capital gains tax on home sales and stricter rules on the purchase of a second house.

Researchers Say Superglue Solves IV Drip Dropouts

Queensland researchers have found a simple solution for a multi-billion-dollar problem plaguing hospitals around the world.

The Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation says for one in three patients, intravenous drips become blocked, are pulled out or fall out - causing pain, leakage6 and sometimes infection.

Dr Simon Bugden says replacing IV drips costs Australian hospitals about 200 million US dollars a year.

He says trials have found a simple dab7 of superglue.

It holds drips in place more securely than the sticky tape usually employed, and it helps to reduce infection.

  The superglue is also anti-bacterial.

Love Is in the Air for Giant Pandas Tian Tian And Yang Guang

Britain's only pair of giant pandas could be brought together for a romantic union as early as this weekend.

Scientists working with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland in Edinburgh have seen a key hormone8 change in the female panda Tian Tian, which suggests she will be ready to breed within 10 days.

This year is the second attempt at getting Tian Tian and her prospective9 partner Yang Guang to breed.

Last year, just a few months after arriving from China for their 10 year stay in Edinburgh, they indulged in some gentle wrestling but did not mate.

Giant pandas are notoriously poor at breeding in captivity10 with only a few zoos outside China managing to successfully rear cubs11.

The females only come into season for a brief 36 hour period each year and are highly picky about mates.
