Every year on the 23rd of March, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) celebrates World Meteorological Day (WMD). This is the date in 1950 that the WMO was created. A year later, it became a specialized1 agency of the United Nations to observe the world’s weather patterns and report on environmental issues. WMD focuses on different themes each year to raise our awareness2 of how the weather impacts on our lives. Previous themes have been weather, climate and water in the information age; water and sustainable development; preventing and coping with natural disasters; and understanding the global impacts of the changing polar environments. All 188 member states of the WMO participate in World Meteorological Day.
The WMO says its vision is “to provide world leadership in expertise3 and international cooperation in weather, climate, water resources and related environmental issues, and thereby4 contribute to the safety and well-being5 of people throughout the world, and to the economic benefit of all nations.” It says that the weather, our climate, and water “know no national boundaries” thus it is essential all countries cooperate to make sure we respect our planet and its resources. The WMO has helped increase our safety, protect us against natural disasters and safeguard the environment. It has a big task ahead in areas such as food security and water resources.
