Britain is going to introduce a new one-pound coin which is designed to be more difficult tofake. It will have 12 sides and be made of two metals. The Treasury⁴ here says there arecurrently 45 million fake pound coins in circulation. It says the replacement⁵ which is due tocome in about three-year’s time would be the most secure coin in the world. The shape of thenew pound is based on the old three-pence coin which went out of circulation in 1971. Thesepeople in New Castle in northeast England gave their reaction. “I think it looks really nice. I likethe shape of it. It’s totally different.” Well, the BBC’s Dan Damen talks to Tom Hockenhull,curator of modern money at British Museum. So do coins have a hugely symbolic⁶ value for thepublic? Did they embody⁷ the nation in some ways? “Absolutely. The pound is particularlyimportant.”
