And, “it’s a wonderful occupation for me. I've never worked a day inmy life.” We’ll speak to Tony Bennett.
Now music may be supposed to live the soul. But one of the world’s most famous musicianshas just given the BBC a rather dispiriting message. Tony Bennett best known for his songssuch as I Left My Heart In San Francisco has told the BBC that most songs written today areterrible. He had his first No. 1 single back in 1951 and it sold more than 15 million records since. At the age of 87 he still performs live around the world and releases a new album this week. It’scalled The Classics and spans a 60-year career in show business. Our arts correspondentRebecca Jones has been talking to him. “There was a bar tender in the club and I wasrehearsing. And he said ‘I don’t mean to interrupt your rehearsal’, he said, ‘but that song youjust sang is that if you record it, I’m gonna be the first one to buy that record.’ And that waskind of a hint that it might become a popular song but had no idea that it would become mysignature song through the years. And you know most performers get tired of gettingclassified with one song.”
