James Cameron, who's spent the past five years working on Avatar, was named best director. The film, which is on course to become the highest grossing2 movie of all time, is now considered to be in pole position to do well at the Oscars.
The Hangover, a film based around a stag party in Las Vegas, won the award for best comedy. Jeff Bridges, who plays a country music singer in the film Crazy Heart, was named best actor. And Meryl Streep took the award for best actress in a comedy for her portrayal3 of the American TV chef, the late Julia Child, in Julie and Julia.
Many of the celebrities4 wore ribbons in support of the people of Haiti. TV viewers were encouraged to give money. The organisers of the show, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said they were donating $100,000 to the earthquake relief fund.
