The broader market S&P 500 ended at a new record level for the second time in two days, as investors¹ preferred to concentrate on brighter economic news, rather than the ongoing² violence in Iraq, which has been pushing oil prices higher. The S&P 500 is now around 6% higher than it was at the beginning of the year. The Dow Jones index has put on more than 2% in the same time. On Thursday, the US Labor³ Department reported initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 last week. Traders also took a positive signal from the Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators⁴, which rose by 0.5% in May.
