 Away from the herd¹, the dominant² male mammoth³ is distracted from his usual routine, today he has a more urgent priority than food, a younger challenger that wants to take his place. This ritual clash of tusks⁴ will decide the future for them both. The rival may be young and fit. The old bull has experience on his side. This time, experience wins. 

 

The biting winter winds that clear the snow produce a wind chill that would kill most mammals. But musk⁵ oxen are made for this, cocooned⁶ in double-layered coats. But cold is not the only danger in this windswept land. The herd reacts and runs for higher ground.

1 herd
