(单词翻译:双击或拖选)
This isn’t the first time it’s happened. Over thelast few years, scientists have examined many other devastating1 impacts in theEarth’s past. Using this knowledge, I want to answer the key questions that theChelyabinsk meteor strike raises.
Where did this alien rock come from?
When will the next one strike?
And can we do anything to protect ourselves?
A fortnight after the impact, the meteor strike isstill big news in Russia. In Chelyabinsk there is a popular new winter pastime, hunting for any fragments of the meteorite2 that remain.
Scientists have also been out in force, particularlyaround Lake Cherbarkul where there is evidence of an impact in the ice. So manyfragments have been found here. It’s been called the Cherbarkul meteorite. Theyare trying to piece together exactly what happened because the fact is no onein the scientific world saw this coming.
