首先，let's warm up，我们还是先来热热身。在第17课中我们讲到了一个短语—— ace¹ in the hole. It means a secret advantage, for ready to use if you need to. 可以翻译为：杀手锏，必杀技，锦囊妙计，秘密王牌，最后王牌，看家本领，绝招，秘密武器，强大的备用手段（或方法）等等意思。

今天说一下这个短语的用法。因为ace in the hole是个idiom，即：习惯用语。有的习惯用语在一些名词前是不能加上任何修饰词的。但是这个短语名词ace前面可以加不定冠词an和物主代词one's，也可以加定冠词the。下面我们来看三个例句。

例句1：High technology remains² the ace in the hole for foreign companies.高科技仍然是外国公司的王牌。

例句2：That 100 dollars is my ace in the hole.那100美元是我应急备用的钱。

例句3：The prosecutor³ had an ace in the hole: an eyewitness⁴.检举人有秘密武器：目击者。

这句话的意思是你还真是有留一手的锦囊妙计呢。我想，我们除了祝福他这次能度过难关，这也是我们目前能做的最好的事了。

在这句话中用了一个含有名词an ace和一个副词短语up one's sleeve来表述“杀手锏”“锦囊妙计”的意思。在这个短语中，an ace up your sleeve中的sleeve意思是袖子。副词短语up one's sleeve是秘密保留着，准备在适当时机或有需要的时候才拿出来或做出来。A-c-e，ace是纸牌中的最大的一张牌。在这个句子中，用an ace和up one's sleeve组合在一起来表述“杀手锏”“锦囊妙计”的意思。

最新第7版牛津词典中是说an ace up one's sleeve is used in British English; ace in the hole is used in American English.但是这个短语在美国习语词典里说道an ace up one's sleeve和ace in the hole是不尽相同的。

不同在那里呢？玩牌的人如果把一张好牌塞在袖管里，他的目的是拿这张牌来换牌从而取胜，但是他的手段既不合游戏规则又不光明正大。这就是an ace up one's sleeve和ace in the hole不同的地方。ace in the hole 虽然是暗牌，但是合乎游戏规则，而an ace up one's sleeve却是暗中藏牌欺骗作弊了，可以翻译为：取胜的手段，花招，耍老千。接下来我们要听个例子。这是律师在跟当事人谈即将开庭的案子。

例句：I believe we'll win your case. Unless the lawyer on the other side has an ace up his sleeve and has bribed⁵ a witness to give false testimony⁶, or something like that: this man is known for his cheating. 我相信我们会打赢这场官司。除非对方的律师会不择手段，使出收买证人作伪证之类的花招来，而这人也确实有欺诈的名声的。
