 In the matter of courage, we all have our limits. There never was a hero who did not have his bounds¹. I suppose it maybe said of Nelson and all the others whose courage has been advertised that there came times in their lives when their bravery knew it had come to its limit.

在勇气问题上，我们都有自己界限。有史以来，从未有过一个英雄在勇气上登顶过。我想媒体大肆宣扬的那些勇士们跟内尔森，在他们一生也有自己的勇气也有受限过。

    I have found mine a good many times. Sometimes this was expected, often it was unexpected². I know a man who was not afraid to sleep with a rattlesnake, but you could not get him to sleep with a safety razor.

我自己就亲身体会了很多次，有时是在我意料之内的，但经常都是始料未及的。我认识一个人敢睡在响尾蛇旁边，却不敢在搁着安全剃刀的旁边睡觉。  

    I never had the courage to talk across a long narrow room. I should be at the end of the room facing all the audience. If I attempt to talk across a room, I find myself turning this way and that, and thus at alternate³ periods, I have part of the audience behind me. You ought never to have any part of the audience behind you. You can never tell what they are going to do.

我从未有过勇气一个长而窄的屋子里演讲，我只有在房间的角落里才敢面对听众。要是试着在房间的中间演说，我发现自己身体不听使唤，会转来转去，在三百六十度转换方向的时间，我就有相当一部分听众无法看到我的脸。然而你不可以拥有一部分背对着你的听众，因为这样你永远也不知道他们将要做什么。

1 bounds

2 unexpected

3 alternate   

adj.交替的，间隔的；v.（使）轮流
