The Tailor in Heaven

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

It came to pass that one beautiful day God wished to take a stroll in the heavenly garden, and took all the apostles and saints with him, leaving no one in heaven but Saint Peter. The Lord had commanded him to allow no one to enter during his absence, so Peter stood by the gate and kept watch. Before long someone knocked. Peter asked who was there, and what he wanted.

"I am a poor, honest tailor who is requesting admission," replied a pleasant voice.

"Honest indeed," said Peter. "Like the thief on the gallows. You have been sticky-fingered and have robbed people of their cloth. You will not get into heaven. The Lord has forbidden me to let anyone in as long he is out."

"Oh, please be merciful," cried the tailor. "Little scraps that fall off the table by themselves are not stolen, and are not worth mentioning. See here, I am limping and have blisters on my feet from walking here. I cannot possibly go back again. Just let me in, and I will do all the dirty work. I will tend the children, wash their diapers, wipe off and clean the benches on which they have been playing, and patch all their torn clothes."

Saint Peter let himself be moved by pity and opened heaven's gate just wide enough for the lame tailor to slip his lean body inside. He had to take a seat in a corner behind the door, and was told to stay there quietly and peacefully, so that the Lord would not notice him when he returned, and become angry.

The tailor obeyed, but one time when Saint Peter stepped outside the door, he got up, and full of curiosity, looked into every corner of heaven, seeing what was there. Finally he came to a place where there were many beautiful and costly chairs. At their center was a seat made entirely of gold and set with glistening precious stones. It stood much higher than the other chairs, and a golden footstool stood in front of it. This was the seat on which the Lord sat when he was at home, and from which he could see everything that was happening on earth.

The tailor stood still, and looked at the seat for a long time, for he liked it better than all the rest. Finally he could control his curiosity no longer, and he climbed up and sat down on it. From there he saw everything that was happening on earth.

He noticed an ugly old woman who was standing beside a stream doing the laundry. She secretly set two scarves aside. Seeing this made the tailor so angry that he took hold of the golden footstool and threw it at the old thief, through heaven down to earth. Unable to bring the stool back again, he quietly sneaked down from the seat, sat back down in his place behind the door, and pretended that he had done nothing at all.

When the Lord and Master returned with his heavenly attendants, he did not notice the tailor behind the door, but when he sat down on his seat, the footstool was missing. He asked Saint Peter what had become of the footstool, but he did not know. Then he asked if he had admitted anyone.

"I know of no one who has been here," answered Peter, "except for a lame tailor, who is still sitting behind the door."

Then the Lord had the tailor brought before him, and asked him if he had taken the footstool, and where he had put it.

"Oh, Lord," answered the tailor joyously, "In my anger I threw it down to earth at an old woman whom I saw stealing two scarves while doing the laundry."

"Oh, you scoundrel," said the Lord, "if I were to judge as you judge, how would it have gone with you? I would have long since had no chairs, benches, seats, no, not even a stove-poker, but would have thrown everything down at the sinners. You can no longer stay in heaven, but must go outside the gate again. From there watch where you are going. Here no one metes out punishment, except for me alone, the Lord."

Peter had to take the tailor out of heaven again, and because his shoes were worn out and his feet were covered with blisters, he took a stick in his hand and went to Wait-a-While, where the good soldiers sit and make merry.

1. I thanked him an awful lot.

於 a lot ?? 於 so many (用於可? ??情?我就可以?,"I ate too much tonight." 或是 "I ate a lot today."。 老美光? a lot ? 又把 a lot ?? 例如 "I ate an awful lot."

吧,a awful lot ?? I thanked him an awful lot." 或者是 "I owe her an awful lot."

2. He is completely retarded.

口抱怨,"He is so retarded." Yes, he is completely retarded."

是?,"I understand." ?可以?,"I completely understand." 笨笨地?,"Yes, I understand." 我肯定?,"Yes. I completely understand what you meant." 或是 "Yes. I perfectly understand what you meant."

3. A: Do you know how it works? B: No, but I am satisfied with the fact that it works.

A: 你知道??(??)?

Do you know how it works?" 什?? 她??:"No, but I am satisfied with the fact that it works." "I am satisfied with the fact that it works." ?

4. Some people have a hard time understanding what 'Glass Only' means.

的,"No Glass" 就是? 情?,也只??,"How can people do that?" 地跟我?,"People have a hard time understanding what 'Glass Only' means."

在上面的例句中, Katie 小妹妹用了have a hard time 是? 於 have difficulty (in) V ing ?? People have a hard time understanding what 'No smoking' means." 或是 "People have difficulty understanding what 'No smoking' means." ??的?法,?比平?直述地?,"How can people smoke here?"?

5. I laughed incredibly hard last night. I almost died.

直述地?,"It was fun. I like it." I laughed incredibly hard last night. I almost died." 法,叫 "I almost died laughing."

"I almost died." 或是 "I almost died V ing" 立刻就有??? 直述的?,就是 "I was so full last night." I was incredibly full last night. I almost died."

6. He is the smartest scientist I've ever seen on this planet.

On earth 和 on this planet 是??? "This is the most powerful and lightest vacuum cleaner you can get on this planet." 最後加上?? on this planet 用以?? 你就可以?,"The US president is the most powerful man on earth/ on this planet." ??吧!

7. She thought she was the center of the universe when we played volleyball.

而已,但 center of the universe (宇宙的中心) ?? 是 center of the universe 或是?他? "They always have to be the center of attention.". Why should I listen to you? Do you really think you are the center of the universe?" (?

的用法比如? king of the universe 或是 queen of the universe 也是很常? 的第一名,我就可以?,"I am the king of the universe."

  8. You scared the shit out of me.

到了,不妨跟他?,"You scared me." 或是 "You frightened me." You scared the shit out of me."

  9. If you see a blur after 3 o'clock, that'd be me.

If you see a blur after 3 o'clock, that'd be me."

  10. I have no income and I have to pay my tuition. I am the poorest of the poor.

上,像是 poorest of the poor 就是一? 比方?,"I would like to donate some money to the poorest of the poor."

跟 poorest of the poor ? 的?是 richest of the rich,看字面上的意思就知道? 人? "There is no question that my boss is the richest of the rich." The richest of the rich.

Overcoming the Problem of Waste

Many large cities are anything but beautiful. Streets are littered with trash. In this trash, however, there is still something that can be useful.

If people want to solve the problem of waste, there is no time to be lost. They must work out ways of making use of good things which are just thrown away as waste.

When a car gets too old, it may not run any more. But the metal that the car was made of is still good. It can be put to use again.

When a bottle is empty, it goes out in the trash. But bottle glass can be ground into sand and used to pave streets.

Garbage from food can be changed into fertilizer. But first you have to fish out all the glass and metal.

Garbage can also be a good source for making building blocks, which are then covered with concrete. Now, more and more machines are designed for this purpose. Some day, people will watch films in a magnificent cinema which has been built out of garbage. Future buildings, roads, and cities maybe made from garbage. But so far, building beautiful cities out of garbage is only a dream.

             Counsel to Girls

             by Robert Herrick

Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,

           Old Times is still a-flying:

And this same flower that smiles to-day,

           To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious Lamp of Heaven, the Sun,

           The higher he's a-getting

The sooner will his race be run,

           And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,

           When youth and blood are warmer;

But being spend, the worse, and worst

           Times, still succeed the former.

         Then be not coy, but use your time;

And while ye may, go marry:

For having lost but once your prime,

           You may for ever tarry.

             向上攀登得越高,

           路程的终点就会越临近,

             剩余的时光也越少。

           青春的年华是最最美好的,

             血气方刚,多热情;

           过了青年,那越来越不妙的

             年月会陆续来临。

           那么,别怕羞,抓住机缘,

             你们该及时结婚;

           你一旦错过了少年,

             会成千古恨。

      注:

      ye:第二人称代词thou(=you)的复数形式。

      a-flying:由动名词加词头a-构成的现在分词,同flying。

      prime:青春

      tarry:耽搁、延迟

President Bush Visits with Wounded Military Personnel

July 3, 2007

12:08 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. General, thank you very much for your hospitality. It's a true honor to come to Walter Reed to be able to see the docs and nurses, the physical therapists who are working with our wounded soldiers. The care here is remarkable. There has been some bureaucratic red-tape issues in the past that the military is working hard to cure. But when it comes time to healing broken bodies, this is a fabulous place.

I am constantly amazed at the character and courage of those who wear our uniform. And that's no more vividly displayed than here in this place of healing. I want to thank our soldiers, sailors and Marines, airmen, Coast Guardsmen and women for their service to the country, and I thank their families. As we head into the 4th of July, we're a fortunate nation to have people who are willing to volunteer in the face of danger to help secure this country in the long run.

I'll be glad to answer two questions from you.

Q Mr. President, are you willing to rule out that you will eventually pardon Scooter Libby?

THE PRESIDENT: First of all, I had to make a very difficult decision. I weighed this decision carefully. I thought that the jury verdict should stand. I felt the punishment was severe, so I made a decision that would commute his sentence, but leave in place a serious fine and probation. As to the future, I rule nothing in or nothing out.

Q Mr. President, federal sentencing guidelines call for jail time in these kinds of cases of perjury and obstruction of justice. Why do you feel otherwise, and are you worried that this decision sends a signal that you won't go to jail if you lie to the FBI?

THE PRESIDENT: I took this decision very seriously on Mr. Libby. I considered his background, his service to the country, as well as the jury verdict. I felt like the jury verdict ought to stand, and I felt like some of the punishments that the judge determined were adequate should stand. But I felt like the 30-month sentencing was severe; made a judgment, a considered judgment that I believe is the right decision to make in this case, and I stand by it.

Thank you all.

96. Many sociologists point out that rural emigrants are putting pressure on population control and social order; that they are threatening to take already scarce city jobs; and that they have worsened traffic and public health problems.

97. It is suggested that governments ought to make efforts to reduce the increasing gap between cities and countryside. They ought to set aside an appropriate fund for improvement of the standard of peasants' lives. They ought to invite some experts in agriculture to share their experiences, information and knowledge with peasants, which will contribute directly to the economic growth of rural areas.
