　　Vladimir Putin is out on video as a judo expert.

　　Russian media have already shown Prime Minister Putin at the wheel of massive racing truck, shirtless on a fishing excursion and tracking a tiger through the Siberian forest.

　　On Tuesday, he presented an instructional judo DVD that bears his name and shows him throwing an opponent to the mat.

　　"Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin" is the product of collaboration between Putin -- a black belt -- and former World and Olympic judo champion Yasuhiro Yamashita.

　　At a nighttime presentation minutes into his 56th birthday, Putin said the title was little more than an "advertising trick." Anyone who watches it "will be learning not from your humble servant but from real geniuses" of the martial art, he said.

　　But portions shown on Russian television depicted a black-clad Putin talking about the history and philosophy of judo, as well as a white-robed Putin demonstrating moves against a practice partner.

　　Putin is a one-time judo champion of his home city St. Petersburg.

　　He is also an avid skier, and his apparent fitness and devotion to physical activity helped increase his popularity in eight years as president. This contrasted sharply with his hard-drinking and chronically ill predecessor, Boris Yeltsin, who died last year.

　　"The level of developing of sports undoubtedly defines the level of development of the country itself," Putin said at the presentation.

　　"Without sports, it's impossible to speak of a healthy way of life, about the health of the nation as such," he said.

　　Most people need to hear those "three little words"- I love you. Once in a while, they hear them just in time.

　　I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward, where I worked as a volunteer. Her husband, Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferred from the gurney to the hospital bed. Although Connie was in the final stages of her fight against cancer, she was alert and cheerful. We got her settled in. I finished marking her name on all the hospital supplies she would be using, then asked if she needed anything.

　　"Oh, yes," she said, "Would you please show me how to use the TV? I enjoy the soaps so much and I don't want to get behind on what's happening." Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas, romance novels and movies with a good love story. As we became acquainted, she confided how frustrating it was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her "a silly woman".

　　"Oh, I know Bill loves me," she said, "but he has never been one to say he loves me, or send cards to me."She sighed and looked out the window at the trees in the courtyard. "I'd give anything if he'd say 'I love you,' but it's just not in his nature."

　　Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to the bed while she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping more, he paced up and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when she no longer watched television and had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill.

　　He talked about having worked as a carpenter and how he liked to go fishing. He and Connie had no children, but they'd been enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could not express his feelings about the fact that his wife was dying.

　　One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject of women and how we need romance in our lives; how we love to get sentimental1 cards and love letters.

　　"Do you tell Connie you love her?" I asked (knowing his answer), and he looked at me as if I was crazy.

　　"I don't have to," he said. "She knows I do!"

　　"I'm sure she knows," I said, reaching over and touching his hands rough, carpenter's hands that were gripping the cup as if it were the only thing he had to hang onto "but she needs to hear it, Bill. She needs to hear what she has meant to you all these years. Please think about it."

　　We walked back to Connie"s room. Bill disappeared inside, and I left to visit another patient. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the bed. He was holding Connie's hand as she slept. The date was February 12.

　　Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the hallway, staring at the floor. I already knew from the head nurse that Connie had died at 11 A.M.

　　When Bill saw me, he allowed himself to come into my arms for a long time. His face was wet with tears and he was trembling. Finally, he leaned back against the wall and took a deep breath.

　　"I have to say something," he said. "I have to say how good I feel about telling her." He stopped to blow his nose. "I thought a lot about what you said, and this morning I told her how much I loved her... and loved being married to her. You should have seen her smile!"

　　I went into the room to say my own good bye to Connie. There, on the bedside table, was a large Valentine card from Bill. You know, the sentimental kind that says, "To my wonderful wife... I love you."

　　When I played with a symphony orchestra, our union reached an agreement with a major airline about which instruments we could carry on board, and which had to be shipped as luggage. A cellist was dismayed to find that his delicate, expensive wood instrument was consigned to the rougher handling and cold temperatures of the baggage hold. He neatly solved the problem. Cello in hand, he approached the flight attendant at the gate and asked, "May I bring my clarinet on board?" Scanning her list, she replied, "Clarinets are okay. 　　This story is called "The Farmer and the Snake." Every day, a farmer went to the city to sell his flowers and farm produce and then went home after selling all his things. One day, he left home very early, so early that when he arrived at the city, the gate was still closed. So he lay down to take a nap, when he awoke he found that the storage bin containing his farm produce had become empty except that there was a gold coin inside. Although all the things in the bin had vanished, the gold was much more valuable so he was still very happy. He thought most probably someone had taken his things and left the payment there, and went home happily with the money.

　　这个故事叫做农夫和蛇。有一个农夫，每天到城里去卖他自己种的花和农产品，卖完以后就回家。有一天，他很早出门，来到城门时，因为还太早，城门还没开，所以他就先躺在那边睡觉。当他醒过来时，看到他装农产品的瓶子都空空了，里面多了一块黄金的钱。虽然瓶子里的东西不见了，不过那块黄金的钱已经很多了，所以他还是非常高兴。他想大概有人拿走他的东西，然后放钱在那边，于是就快乐地带着钱回家了。

　　The next day, the farmer again went out to sell his things but again arrived too early so he slept outside the city gate just like he had done the day before. And the incident repeated itself. All the produce that the farmer had brought disappeared, and there was a gold coin in the bin! At that time, gold was very valuable. One gold coin had a value many times higher than the farmer's produce.

　　隔天，农夫又出门去做买卖，同样也是来得太早，所以他又在城门那边睡觉。结果又发生一样的事情，农夫带来的东西都不见了，瓶子里面又多了一块黄金的钱！那时候黄金是很有价值，所以一块黄金的钱比农夫的农产品还高出好几倍的价值。

　　Then one day some time later, the farmer's father asked him, "Where have you gotten so many gold coins lately? Where did the money come from?" So the farmer revealed to his father what had happened. After listening to his story, the father thought, "One day I'll follow my son as he goes out, and see who's been consuming his things and leaving the money in the bin."

　　后来有一天，农夫的父亲问他：最近你怎么忽然间得到那么多黄金的钱？那些钱是从哪里来的？农夫就把他遇到的事情告诉他的父亲。他的父亲听了以后，心想：我要找一天跟着我的儿子出门，看看到底是谁吃他的东西，然后把钱放在他的瓶子里面。

　　So one day, when the farmer went out to do business, his father quietly followed him. While the farmer was sleeping near the city gate, his father saw a snake crawl up to his bin and eat his produce. Having finished eating, the snake once again spat a gold coin into the bin as payment to the farmer before leaving. Seeing this, the farmer's father thought, "If I kill the snake, I'll be able to seize all its gold coins!" He then picked up a stone and cut the snake into two parts.

　　有一天农夫出去做买卖时，他的父亲就默默跟着他。当农夫在城门附近睡觉的时候，他的父亲看到一条蛇爬到他的瓶子那边吃他的东西，吃完以后，就吐出一块黄金的钱到瓶里面，算是付钱给他这样子，然后蛇就爬走了。农夫的父亲想：「如果我把这条蛇杀掉，就可以得到它全部黄金的钱了！」于是他找了一块石头，把那条蛇割成两段。

　　At that time, the head and trunk of the snake were already in its den, and only the tail was outside. The father thought that there must be a big treasure in the den so he told his son to reach inside for it. But unexpectedly, when the farmer reached his hand into the den, the snake bit and killed him! Even though it had been cut into two, the snake could still bite! I understand how this could have happened because that was how I got bitten when I was small. At that time, I saw a centipede that had been beaten and squashed by someone, leaving only the head intact. I thought it was dead, and to make sure, I poked it with my foot. It bit me hard and I cried for three days. (Laughter) I was really dumb! Remember! Don't play with a centipede even if it looks dead. Sometimes it just fakes death; it's not really dead.

　　那时候，那条蛇的头部和身体已经爬进它的窝里面，只剩下尾巴露在外面。农夫的父亲认为蛇窝里面有很多宝藏，就叫农夫伸手去拿。没想到当农夫把手伸进去时，却被蛇咬死了！被割成两段的蛇竟然还可以咬人啊！这种情形我知道，我小的时候也曾经被这样咬过。那时候我看到一只蜈蚣被人家打扁了，只剩下头还没扁，我认为它已经死了。为了要确定看看它是不是真的死了，我就用脚去拨看看，结果被咬了一口，哭了三天（大家笑），太笨了！你们要记得，看到蜈蚣不应该玩，即使它已经死了，也不要跟它玩，因为有时候它只是装死而已，还没有真的死。

　　Perhaps that was what happened to the snake in the story. Its head wasn't dead yet. Thus, it bit the farmer, who subsequently died. Seeing his son killed, the farmer's father cried brokenheartedly next to the son's dead body and asked the snake, "You snake! Why did you kill my son? Why did you bite my son and kill him?" Instead of answering him, the snake asked, "Why did you break my back with the stone? There was no animosity between us. I had never done anything bad to you, nor had I done you any harm. If you had been more patient and waited, I would have given the entire treasure here to you. However, because you struck me, I bit and killed your son. Had I killed you instead, you would not be in such deep sorrow. I killed your son so that you'd live the rest of your life in agony." This snake was venomously wise! Instead of biting the man who tried to kill it, it bit his son so that the father would be in agony for the rest of his life. It was truly amazing!

　　故事中的这条蛇大概也是一样的情形，它的头还没死，所以咬了农夫一口，结果他就死掉了。农夫的父亲看到自己小孩的尸体躺在那边，哭得很伤心。然后他问蛇说：蛇啊，你为什么要杀我的儿子？为什么要把我的儿子咬死呢？那条蛇就反问他：那你为什么用石头打断我的背呢？我们之间又没有什么仇恨，我从来没有对你做过什么坏事，也不曾伤害过你，如果你有耐心一点，慢慢来，我里面的宝藏都会给你。不过，因为你打我，所以我才把你的小孩咬死。如果我把你咬死的话，你就不会那么伤心，所以我把你的小孩咬死，让你整个辈子很痛苦。蛇的智慧真的很毒啊！它不咬那个杀?它的人，而咬他的儿子，让他痛苦整个辈子。好厉害！

墨西哥是以小组第二的身份出线的。这个rank second on four points的表达可真够简单明了。我用汉语怎么说都要多出好几个词。

3. We lost by 1 point.

我们输了一分。

在英文要讲赢了几分或是输了几分非常简单，用 win by 和 lose by (通常是用的过去式)就成了。例如"我们赢了七分"就可以说We won by seven. 或是在数字后加上 points 代表赢或输了多少分，比如We won by seven points. 输了几分则把 won 改成 lost，例如 We lost by seven. 或是We lost by seven points.

　　THE PRESIDENT: It's an amazing experience to come back to a place where you were raised. Laura was raised in Midland, I was raised in Midland, this is -- this is one of the three homes I lived in, and I kind of remember it. (Laughter.) The bedroom -- actually I do remember the wood on the wall that -- in the bedroom.

　　You know, I love Midland, and Texas. We've got a lot of friends here. I learned a lot of values that I hold dear here. It's good to see mom's -- Laura's mom here. And it's the first time I've been back here since I've been the President, and it's -- it was just a very heartwarming experience.

　　You know, I've told my friends here, I said, you know, I'm not going to change as a person because of politics or Washington -- that's what I said when I left. I think they appreciate that. I want them to know that, you know, even though I had to deal with a lot of tough issues, that I'm still the same person that they knew before and that, you know, I'm wiser, more experienced, but my heart and my values didn't change.

　　So it's great to see our friends. You know, we got a couple more hard months to go, and obviously we've got to deal with this financial situation. Congress took a big step in the direction of at least giving us the tools necessary to bring some stability into the marketplace. Got to get credit flowing of course so that people feel -- feel comfortable about conducting business. So there's a lot of work to be done. In the meantime it's good to come back here to where it all started for us.
