Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid may be 1)backing down from a 2)controversial threat to declare a civil emergency on Friday. Officials say instead, the president is hoping to cut a last minute deal with his political 3)opponents that will allow him to stay in office.
Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has begun 4)hinting that he may not follow through on his threat to declare a civil emergency by 6 pm local time Friday.
Last week the president said he would move to declare an emergency and 5)disband Parliament if lawmakers failed to drop plans to hold 6)impeachment hearings on August first.
According to local media reports, Mr. Wahid now says his powers as president allow him to take certain actions, but that there were things he simply would not do. Mr. Wahid did not 7)elaborate on the statement, but the comment was widely interpreted as a sign he may back down.
A presidential spokesman says Mr. Wahid is now close to striking a deal with opposition2 leaders that could allow him to stay in office.
Party leaders Wednesday confirmed that talks are underway. Opposition leader and Speaker of Parliament Akbar Tandjung said negotiations3 had begun but there had been no 8)commitment from any side so far.
