(单词翻译:单击)

Kevin Rudd has been swiftly sworn in as Australia’s new Prime Minister, after ousting1 Julia Gillard as Labor2 Party chief in a dramatic ballot3.

Gillard’s Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has also been sworn in as deputy Prime Minister. The move is set to see Rudd leading the ruling Australian Labor Party to elections scheduled for September. Gillard, the first female Australian Prime Minister, says she will now quit politics after her defeat.

Gillard called for a party ballot on Wednesday after weeks of falling support for her minority government in opinion polls. Recent polls show Rudd is more popular with voters. Rudd led the Labor Party to victory in late 2007, but was dropped in favor of Gillard in June 2010.
