In northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, a female teacher in the city of Jiamusi saved her students from being run over by a bus, but couldn't escape from the tragedy herself. Zhang Lili is now being treated the intensive care unit of a local hospital.
The 29-year-old teacher saved two students but at a high cost. They were slightly injured, but Zhang Lili lost both of her legs.
Tang Kaijun, an injured student, said, "I had just left school when I heard someone shouting ’look out for the bus.’"
But he didn’t react fast enough.
Xu Lixia, mother of injured student, said, "The teacher pushed the kids out of the way of the bus and then went under the wheels. She was run over twice."
Tang Wanfang, father of injured student, said, "Her torso was separated from the hip1 bone, part of which was apparently2 crushed."
The tragedy was caused by careless driving. The driver of a school bus had her leg pressed against the stick shift while she was chatting to passengers and lost control of the bus. The bus hit two vehicles stopped near the school gate before running over Zhang Lili.
Zhang Lili was sent to the central hospital of Jiamusi. Her injury was too severe and doctors had to amputate her legs. Her vital signs are still not stable.
Song Fengli, mother of Zhang Lili’s student, said, “My kids and I can not accept this fact. All students in her class cried. She was very kind to them"
Zhang Lili has been transferred to the biggest general hospital in Harbin, capital city of Heilongjiang province. The Ministry3 of Health has dispatched4 a medical team of five experts to give her the best possible treatment.
