Confidence is remarkably2 up in major European economies, as data shows signs of optimism in the block's recovery, however the long lasting3 decline in the eurozone will not end in the short term.
The European Commission's closely watched economic sentiment indicator4 revealed that November marked eight consecutive5 months of rising optimism and that the latest figures were higher than most analysts6 had forecast.
Among the bloc's larger economies, confidence rose significantly in Germany, Spain and Netherlands, as well as recession mired7 Italy. European markets made gains with an improvement in sentiment being seen as evidence that the eurozone's economic recovery is stable despite GDP growth relapsing to almost zero in the third quarter along with figures showing consumer sentiment has actually weakened.
But economists8 pointed9 out that even though confidence is rising it is still not at a level that would be considered a return to full health, while confidence in the single currency area's second largest economy France actually fell in November. And with the bloc's unemployment rate remaining at a record high even the European Commission fired off a warning of caution today noting that while overall sentiment was still improving, the pace of improvement had "noticeably decelerated over the past two months."
