South Korea announced an extension of its air defense1 identification zone on Sunday. The zone encompasses2 submerged rocks within the overlapping4 exclusive economic zones of China and South Korea. China responded on Monday saying it was willing to maintain communications with South Korea on the basis of equality and mutual5 respect.

For more on the disputes over the air defense identification zones among the three Asian countries, we are joined by our correspondents Shane Hahm in Seoul and Terrence Terashima in Tokyo.

Q1. Shane, Japan’s Kyodo News Agency says that South Korea expanding its air defense identification zone southward is a move targeting China. Is that the general feeling in Japan?

Q2. Terry, Japan has been strongly opposing China’s move to expand its air defense identification zone. How is the Japanese government reacting to the similar move by South Korea?

Q3. Do Japan and South Korea’s air defense identification zones overlap3? What is the response from both countries on that? Terry? Shane?

Q4. Shane, compared to the US and Japan, the South Korean reaction to China's ADIZ has been milder. What are the comments in the South Korean media on that?
