A 7-year-old Siberian Husky is making headlines on the internet here in China for becoming the first canine1 in the country, as far as we know, to receive four artificial limbs in northeast China's Dalian city. Nicknamed "Da Hei", he now gets around relatively2 well, and he's come a long way since his rescue.

Probably not the best gait among the proud family of Siberian Huskies. But nothing can put a damper on "Da Hei’s" pleasure of trotting3 around, something most other dogs take for granted.

"It was on an afternoon in the year 2010. Two young men took Da Hei to my clinic for treatment. They said they needed to go to the bank to withdraw some money, but they never came back." Veterinarian Mr. Liu said.

Not much is known about Da Hei’s past, except his limbs were deliberately5 and maliciously6 torn off. Liu, being a vet4 and a natural carer, decided7 that from then on, Da Hei would be his responsibility.

"At the time, Da Hei was in really bad shape. First I had to remove the dead skin and flesh from his limbs. Then I performed amputation8 on the bones. He’s a survivor9. It took him only 19 days to recover."Mr. Liu said.

With love and compassion10, Da Hei was nursed back to health. But by then, the kind-hearted veterinarian didn’t just want Da Hei to survive, he wanted Dahei to able to walk and live life.

"With the money donated by many good people, a prosthetics factory in Beijing was commissioned to make prosthetic limbs for Da Hei. It took a total of 8 months. We tried and re-tried." Mr. Liu said.

After 8 months of hard work by Dahei, and by those caring people around him, he was able to walk again.

"It wasn’t an easy process for Da Hei. I know for him sometimes walking was painful because the prosthetics weren’t adjusted right. But he was really brave. I kind of admire him." Liu’s assistant Mr. Zhu said.

Da Hei will never be able to walk like other dogs do. But he can be happy like others, with so much love around.

rescue.
