托福词汇：用定义法和反义法猜词

　　一.定义法

　　在某些阅读文章里，作者会通过定义的方法来对某个生僻的单词或短语进行定义，在做定义的过程中，一些明显的标记词汇就会被使用到，比如or, means, refers to, is ,is called, is defined as, which is 等等。下面我们通过例子，来猜测某些生词的意义。

　　A court interpreter is anyone who interprets in a civil or criminal court proceeding¹ for a witness or defendant² who speaks or understands little or no English.

　　这个句子是通过“is”对 “court interpreter” 进行定义，我们通过anyone who….就可以对court interpreter 有个清晰的定义。

　　二.近/反义词法

　　表示转折和让步的连接词 (如however, on the other hand, despite, in spite of,等)在托福阅读里可以作为一些猜生词的工具。看下面例子In spite of simplicity³, the national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive⁴ artifact.

　　我们现在猜测primitive的意思，首先in spite of 表示让步，所以simplicity 应当与 no…primitive 意思相反，所以我们可以得出 primitive = simplicity
