US President Barack Obama says that the country’s mutual1 security treaty with Japan applies to the Diaoyu islands, which are at the center of a territorial2 dispute between Japan and China. In a statement made ahead of his visit to Japan, Obama said the US was opposed to any unilateral attempts to undermine Japan’s administration of these islands.

For more insight, joining us now in the studio is Ruan Zongze, vice3 president of the China Institute of International Studies. Thank you for joining us.

Q1. The US mutual security treaty with Japan commits Washington to protecting territories under the administration of Japan. But how are "administrative4 rights" different from "territorial sovereignty"?

Q2. With its “pivot to Asia", the Obama administration seeks to strengthen US influence throughout the fast-growing region, in both economic and security areas. How do you think the US president’s current tour through Asia will affect this goal?
