South Korea has confirmed 23 more cases of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome1 virus, bringing the total number to 87. Among them, five have died from the illness.
According to the country's health ministry2, 17 of the new cases come from the same Seoul hospital emergency room where the country's first patient remained before being confirmed MERS-positive.
The South Korean government has identified 24 health facilities where infections took place or MERS patients visited. More than 2,300 people in the country were under quarantine as of Sunday—some in health care facilities but most at home.
Authorities3 say they will step up the monitoring of people under quarantine and will track their cellphones to prevent the spread of MERS.
