(单词翻译)
Ya?l: Today, on A Moment of Science, another episode of guilty confessions1. That's right. Don is going to confess a secret, and then we'll use science to help him understand it.
Don: I confess nothing, Ya?l. My conscience is clear.
Y: Then how come I smell cigarette smoke?
D: All right! I confess! I'm smoking again.
Y: But why, Don? You were doing so well.
D: That's what's so
frustrating2. Last night I went out for a drink with my
buddies3, and next thing you know, I was
puffing4 away. I feel so ashamed. Not smoking sure takes more willpower than I've got.
Y: But willpower isn't all of it. Scientists have long been aware of the link between drinking and smoking. In fact, eighty to ninety percent of
alcoholics6 also smoke, which is about three times the rate in the general population. But a recent study suggests that what you're
dealing7 with isn't just behavioral--it also has to do with brain chemistry.
D: How so?
Y: Well, the study suggests that alcohol increases the pleasurable effects of
nicotine8. Participants drank an
alcoholic5 beverage9 and smoked either a regular cigarette or a nicotine free one. Those who smoked nicotine-free cigarettes didn't report as much satisfaction, which indicates that the nicotine itself plays a critical role in the interaction.
D: And then there's all that lowering of inhibitions that happens when you drink.
Y: It doesn't take much alcohol to increase the pleasures of nicotine.
D: Pretty
insidious10. No wonder I've been having such a hard time.
Y: Well, once scientists get to the bottom of the pharmacological interaction that happens between alcohol and nicotine, they may have a better understanding of how to treat both
addictions11 more effectively.
