[00:32.22]Terry Joyce talks about her experience of living and working in England
[00:40.82]where she has been for the past eleven years.
[00:46.80]I:So, Terry. You're been in England for quite a long time now.
[00:52.38]T: Hmm.
[00:55.58]I:What differences do you notice between England and the United States?
[01:01.16]T:Obviously the biggest difference is the people
[01:05.70]The average Englishman is…mm cold and not very open.
[01:13.98]I: Oh.
[01:16.90]T:In the United States it's very different
[01:21.11]We start conversations with people in the street,in the subway;
[01:27.30]we're a lot more outgoing than people here. You know, when I first came
[01:34.43]I couldn't understand why I was getting so little reaction from people
[01:40.58]but now I see that they thought I was overpowering and too friendly too soon.
[01:48.07]I:But,tell me;does the Englishman improve as you get to know him?
[01:53.36]T:Oh yes.
[01:56.60]I:Oh good.
[01:59.88]T:Once you have made a friend ,it's a friend for life,
[02:04.42]but it takes a very long time
[02:08.63]I'll tell you something that I think is very important.
[02:13.67]An Englishman in America is respecte.Everyone wants to talk to him
[02:20.76]We're inquisitive .we love his accent and his countre
[02:26.48]But Americans in England are thought to be little inferior because of their loud
[02:32.75]behavior and their language
[02:36.53]One thing I've learned is that English people like a certain distance
[02:43.19]When I was talking to someone.he would move away, you know.move backwards
[02:49.92]and I thought "Do I smell? Am I boring him
[02:56.00]And the reasons was, you see, Americans stand closer when they're talking
[03:01.80]Again, English people like a certain distance.

[06:43.96]Many centuries ago,
[06:48.53]a group of Jews landed in India and immediately went to the king
[06:56.09]They told him that they were lost and wanted to settle in his kingdom.
[07:03.97]In those days any foreigner was viewed with suspicion
[07:10.70]So the king was hesitant about letting them in
[07:16.75]He sent for one glass of milk and one glass of water
[07:23.16]He asked the leader of the Jews to taste the milk
[07:28.70]Then he poured out some milk and added some water
[07:35.62]He asked the leader to taste the milk again and said:"
[07:41.74]What is the difference in taste?"
[07:46.09]The leader said:"The second time the milk tastes terrible
[07:54.23]"That is because of the water added to the milk," said the king
[08:00.53]"The water dilutes the milk and spoils its taste
[08:06.61]So you too your addition will spoil the kingdom
[08:13.24]The leader of the Jews thought for a moment and asked for another glass of milk
[08:21.66]He then added sugar to the milk and asked the king to taste it
[08:28.18]It tastes sweet," said the king.
[08:33.65]The leader of the Jews bowed his head and said:"Oh, king
[08:41.24]That is how we would like to live here
[08:46.28]as the small amount of sugar which sweetens the large quantity of milk
[08:52.94]and not as the water which dilutes the milk
