[02:25.37]Susan is so busy reading these magazines and watching her favorite TV shows
[02:33.22]that she often forgets to wash her hair or take care of her clothes.
[02:40.13]While she reads the magazines, she eats chocolate. When Susan is not watching TV,
[02:49.16]she talks for hours on the telephone with her friends.
[02:55.14]Jennifer is the kind of girl who impresses you at first sight.
[03:01.55]She has short hair and likes to dress herself like a "handsome" boy.
[03:09.22]And she looks really "cool" in blue jeans and T-shirt.
[03:16.27]Adventure stories and romantic love stories are her favorite,
[03:22.36]of which she can cover 200 pages in an hour and retell everything in vivid detail!
[03:30.67]As long as Jennifer can get a 60 in physics or computer science
[03:38.09]or any of the other courses she has little interest in, that's all she cares about.
[03:45.22]She will not make any effort to get higher marks.

[03:56.05]Harry is of medium height and weight. He looks quite serious with his thick glasses.

[05:28.39]The following is an interview of a college student, Sheng Mei,
[05:34.37]about friends and friendship.
[05:38.98]I:Do you have many friends?
[05:42.68]S:Yes, I have many friends and acquaintances but only one of them is very close to me
[05:50.42]I:When did you meet this friend and how did your friendship develop?
[05:55.50]S:We met in our first year in senior middle school, about five years ago.
[06:03.35]Xiaoqing and I were both in the same experimental class.
[06:09.47]We had a lot more free time than students in the regular classes
[06:14.87]so we did many interesting things together.
[06:19.69]I:Do you have any close friends at the university?
[06:24.70]S:No, I think friendship takes time to develop.
[06:30.13]That's probably the main reason why I haven't made any more close friends here.
[06:36.54]I'm too busy studying and going to classes.
[06:41.47]I:Why do you think you became close friends with that particular girl,
[06:46.76]rather than other girls in your class?
[06:50.90]S:Well, it was due to a combination of factors. At the beginning,
[06:57.56]we were both chosen to represent our class in a speech contest,
[07:03.14]so we worked closely together.
[07:08.36]Then, I discovered that she was a very honest person
[07:13.30]and I think honesty is a very important aspect of friendship.
[07:19.42]I:Were there any other things that strengthened your friendship?
[07:24.38]S:Yes. We were both on the basketball team, so we spent hours practising together.
[07:32.92]Teamwork and cooperation certainly made us appreciate each other even more.
[07:40.15]We also took part in running races, she helped me a lot.
[07:45.55]She organized a singing contest and I did a lot of things for her.
[07:51.82]I think helping each other is another important aspect of friendship.
[07:57.22]I:Do you still see each other on a daily basis?
[08:02.15]S:No, unfortunately we aren't in the same city now.
[08:08.41]I passed the entrance examination, but she failed. We were terribly sad, at first.
[08:16.19]But we are still best friends and that will never change.
[08:21.91]I:How would you summarize the difference between a really close friend
[08:27.02]and other friends?
[08:30.98]S:It's a question of a process, depth, and openness. Like a flower,
[08:38.11]real friendship grows day by day.
[08:42.40]It needs many special ingredients to flourish.
[08:47.51]Exercise 2
