1. Investigators in California have packed up a 28-foot section of a ruptured natural gas pipeline and shipped it off to Washington DC for analysis. The pipeline was blown out of the ground and hurled 100 feet during last week's explosion that killed at least four people. Meanwhile residents near San Francisco were allowed to return home yesterday.
2. Congress returned to the work after summer vacation this week, but lawmakers won't be in the nation's capital for long. It's expected both the House and Senate will be in session for about four weeks then head back home to campaign for the November elections 50 days away.
3. The family of Sarah Shourd hopes the Americans who have been held in Iran for more than a year now will be released from custody today. However, the Iranian government appears to be moving ahead with spy charges against Shourd and two other Americans. The indictments were issued Sunday against the three.
4. It may be far out in the Atlantic, but Hurricane Igor is strengthening into a major storm, currently at a Category 4 with 150-mile-an-hour winds. Forecasters think it could strengthen into a max Cat (Category) 5 later today. |
