Carol: Daniel is going to quit his science teaching job at the elementary school. He's hunting for a job as an ESL teacher or EFL teacher.

Sandra: Good for him! He needs to make some changes in his life. Ever since his wife dumped him a year ago, he has really not been as happy as he used to be. But what do ESLand EFL stand for?

Carol: ESL is an abbreviation for English as a second language. An ESL teacher usually teachers English to people who are learning English as a second language while living in an English-speaking country. Since they are immersed in English almost all the time, ESL students are usually highly motivated and are expected to do a lot of reading for fun.

Sandra: So when Danicl volunteers to teacher English to immigrants here at the shelter, he's actually working as an ESL teacher.

Carol: Right. Daniel really enjoys helping the immigrants study English, and he's donated lots of simple children's books to the shelter.

Sandra: He's got a generous heart. What does EFL mean?

Carol: That means English as a Foreign Language. EFL is taught in countries where English is not an offcial language.

Sandra: But I thought kids everywhere were learning English.

Carol: Usually students in other counties don't read enough in English; therefore, their English vocabularies are limited.

Sandra: Oh, I get it. that's why many of the immigrant children at the shelter have poor English skills. Maybe they studied some English in their home countries, but only a few have read a lot of books.

Carol: You sound like Daniel.

Sandra: Well, Daniel certainly understands the importance of reading. And so do I.
