1. The Republicans have regained control of the House of Representatives and made significant gains in the US Senate. It was the biggest party turnover in more than 70 years. And likely Speaker of the House John Boehner called it a repudiation of Washington and politicians who refused to listen to the people.

 

2. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will be returning to Washington, winning a tight battle against Republican Sharon Angle. Reid will return for his fifth term. For months, Reid had trailed in the polls and only recently was able to catch up.

 

3. There remain some Senate races that are too close to call. Winners have not been declared in Washington State, Colorado and Alaska. It may be some time before the winner in Alaska is known because of the write-in campaign of Lisa Murkowski. As of late Tuesday night, write-ins had about 40 percent of the vote, compared to 35 percent for Republican Joe Miller.

 

4. Authorities in Greece have halted all outgoing mail deliveries abroad after a spade of parcel bombs. The 48-hour ban took effect today after booby-trapped parcels reached the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and halted flights to an Italian airport.
