1. Qantas's A380 made an emergency landing in Singapore after an engine blew out about 15 minutes after takeoff. Qantas has grounded its fleet of six A380s. One expert says the superjumbo was designed to fly on two of its four engines and would not have simply dropped out of the sky.

 

2. The Senate's top Republican is making it clear that his party's main goal is to keep President Barack Obama from being re-elected. Minority leader Mitch McConnell called for Senate votes to cut spending, shrink government and repeal or erode the healthcare law.

 

3. Authorities in Haiti are urging hundreds of thousands of homeless to flee the tents and tarps they've been living under since January's earthquake. Tropical storm Tomas is approaching, and forecasters say it could reach hurricane strength.

 

4. Rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena is aiming to finish the New York City Marathon Sunday. Pena said at a news conference that he jogged through the tunnels while trapped underground.
