In 1855, British soldiers in Nova Scotia decided to try a form of field hockey on the frozen lakes and ponds, using a puck instead of a ball. Ice hockey was born. The popularity of this new winter sport soon spread throughout Canada and the northeastern United States. An American student at a prep school in New Hampshire helped to establish the game's official rules in 1885. The same year, Canada had its first hockey league.
Lord Stanley, Canada's English Governor General, loved the new game so much he bought a large silver bowl, announcing that it would be given to the best team in Canada each year. That bowl, now called the Stanley Cup, is still awarded to the team that wins the NHL championship.
