1. At least five people are dead and Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition following a shooting that happened outside a Tucson, Arizona, supermarket as Giffords was meeting with constituents. Hospital officials say Giffords has undergone surgery. Those killed include a federal judge and a nine-year-old child. US capital police say the alleged shooter is in custody.

2. People familiar with the investigation tell the Associated Press that the man held in mass shooting has been identified as 22-year-old Jared Laughner. Little information is immediately known about Laughner, such as his background or a possible motive in the attack.

3. President Obama is speaking out about the shooting. The president has called the incident an “unspeakable tragedy.” He also says that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society.

4. Brazilian authorities say the number of people left homeless by flooding has risen to about 100,000 in four southeastern states. Civil Defense authorities in the hardest-hit states say 16 people have been killed there as of Friday.
