1. A surgeon says Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords is able to communicate after being shot in the head yesterday. The doctor says Giffords responded to doctors' commands. The gunshot went through the left side of her head. Surgeons worked to reduce pressure from swelling in the brain by removing bone fragments.

2. A millennium mourn about some of the other victims. Nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green was one of six people killed. She was born September 11, 2001, featured in a book that chronicled one baby from each state born on that day.

3. An IranAir passenger jet carrying around 100 people crashed as it was making an emergency landing and broke into several pieces. Iran's official news agency says 70 people died while 32 survived.

4. Pope Benedict marked the end of the Christmas season by baptizing 21 newborns. The intimate ceremony took place in the Sistine Chapel.
