1. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says some of the problems slowing the economy could last into next year. At a news conference, Bernanke said a troubled housing market continues to depress growth.

2. Water is rising in North Dakota, going over levees earlier than expected. Nearly 11,000 residents around Minot are having to evacuate their homes for a second time in a month.

3. NATO allies are getting briefed by US officials, talking about plans to pull troops out of Afghanistan. The tally could have 10,000 troops out by year's end, another 20,000 home next year.

4. That lone penguin, stranded on a beach in New Zealand will have to get home to Antarctica on its own. For now, the aquatic bird appears healthy and well-fed, hanging out on the sandy beach.
