Women could be given a greater role in Australia’s Defense Force frontline. Women are already allowed to serve in combat units, but their roles are restricted. They can’t join the SAS or several other military units due to restrictions on the basis of physicality. But the Defense Minister Greg Combet has told Parliament, he wants new physical employment standards where individuals are assessed on ability not gender. Police say they had full control of a large crowd that gathered in Sydney’s west overnight, who were angry about the arrest of a man during a raid on his home. The Middle Eastern Organized Crime Squad carried out three raids in the same street at Auburn last night. One man was arrested after punching a police officer in the face. This speech steered well clear of politics after conservatives speared it would be an indoctrination. President Obama told students to set themselves goals, study hard and stick with their education. And Parramatta’s Jarryd Hayne has won the 2009 Dally M Player of the Year medal. The 21-year-old said it’s the best thing to have happened in his life. He beat the Cowboys’ Johnathan Thurston by just three votes. More news at midday. |
