Treasury head Ken Henry will be under pressure this morning to defend the government’s economic stimulus measures. Mr. Henry will front the Senate inquiry into the $42 billion package .This week's interest rate rise and the better-than-expected jobless figures have further fueled debate on whether the stimulus should be wound back. A national memorial will be held in Samoa today for the victims of the Pacific tsunami. The bodies of a dozen victims will be buried in the grave close to the capital Apia. Federal government backbencher Belinda Neal has spoken publicly about her decision to stay married to John Della Bosca. The couple’s private life became public earlier this year and Mr. Della Bosca admitted having an affair, forcing him to resign as New South Wales' health minister. Ms. Neal told the ABC’s Q and A her decision was a feminist one. And the father of tennis player Jelena Dokic has reportedly gone on a hunger strike in a Serbian jail. His Lawyer says he’s refusing to take food, water or medicines. He’s protesting against his 15-month prison sentence. Dokic was jailed for threatening to blow up the car of the Australian Ambassador in Belgrade. And there’ll be more news updates later. |
