A full independent investigation will be held into a huge fire at the West Atlas oil rig in the Timor Sea. The blaze has been extinguished and the oil and gas leak fueling the fire has also been plugged. The West Atlas rig had been gushing oil into the Timor Sea for more than 10 weeks. Australia’s relationship with Fiji has hit a new low with the expulsion of Australia’s High Commissioner. Fiji's military ruler, Frank Bainimarama has accused the Australian and New Zealand governments of interfering in judicial appointments. And he's ordered the High Commissioners from both countries to leave. Foreign Affairs Minister Steven Smith says he is worried about the move, because it will further isolate the Pacific island nation. The former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has appeared at his war crimes trial in The Hague for the first time. Karadzic boycotted the first three days of the trial and wants more time to prepare his defense. He denies charges of genocide relating to the Bosnian War in the 1990s. And economists say the Reserve Bank could lift rates for an unprecedented third month in a row, if the economic data calls for another rise. The RBA yesterday increased the cash rate by a quarter of a percentage point, with all the major banks immediately passing on the rate hike in full. |
