The Federal Opposition and the Greens have criticized a proposal to accommodate asylum seekers in tents on Christmas Island. The Immigration Department says it may house some asylum seekers in tents if the Christmas Island detention center reaches capacity. The Greens and the Opposition say the overcrowding is the government's fault. The center on Christmas Island is now just 16 people off full capacity. There are almost one hundred bushfires burning across New South Wales. Weather conditions have eased and there's been some light rain but not enough to dampen the blazes. Thirty firefighters from Queensland have been brought in to help battle with fires and more will arrive from the ACT tomorrow. It's turned to a long night for Barack Obama in Oslo, as he continues to celebrate his Nobel Peace Prize. After a pop star-like appearance on his hotel balcony, the U.S. President was later fated at an official dinner. More speeches and more cheer to round off his big day. And things are heating up at the Copenhagen Climate Summit with a war of words between the U.S. and China. America's chief negotiator has taken a swipe of China for not doing enough to limit its emissions. China's top delegate then blamed countries like the U.S. for causing the problem that everyone is trying to solve. That’s the news for now. I’ll be back with more news later. |
