The Federal Government's confirmed that four detainees have escaped Sydney's Villawood detention centre in the last month. All four have since been recaptured and the Government says security is now tighter. Another 90 asylum seekers will move to Villawood at the weekend with the detention centre on Christmas Island near full.
Barack Obama has used a surprise visit to Afghanistan to press its President Hamid Karzai to do more to stamp out corruption and drug trafficking. It was Mr. Obama's first visit as president. The trip was kept secret for security reasons.
The Australian Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu will today know his fate when a Chinese judge hands down the verdict in his industrial espionage and corruption trial. Hu and his three co-accused have all admitted to taking bribes. They're hoping their admissions will be taken into consideration.
The first talks have been held between the Thai prime minster and leaders of the anti-government demonstrations that have paralyzed Bangkok. Anti-government protest leaders repeated their demands for new elections, arguing that's the only way to solve problems created by the military coup of 2006. But the prime minister said an early poll could inflame an already volatile situation.
