Security officials in Russia say they’ve made important breakthroughs in the investigation into the metro bombing. They say video surveillance shows the two suspected suicide bombers had accomplices. Local media says there is new evidence that links the suspects to Chechnya.

 

The Prime Minister’s continuing his big health sale in Victoria today. It comes as the Opposition denies that its change of heart about the health plan is related to a poor opinion poll. Tony Abbott has spent weeks criticizing the plan. But after a dip in the polls yesterday, he revealed he may now let it through Parliament.

 

The Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce has defended a range of comments he made about the Productivity Commission yesterday. He told at lunch that he used Productivity Commission reports as toilet paper. The Government has described the Opposition frontbencher’s comments as offensive. But Senator Joyce says he was being ironic.

 

And the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland has produced the first record-breaking high-energy particle collisions. Scientists working on the machine have successfully smashed beams of proton particles together at unprecedented energies. This marks the beginning of work that could lead to the discovery of a fundamental new physics.
