The Federal Government will use today’s release of an updated economic forecast to push its economic credentials as it prepares to call an election. The forecast is expected to confirm that the budget will return to surplus in 2013. The Opposition says that update is a smokescreen and the forecast is unreliable. Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says Australia is committed to asylum seeker talks with East Timor despite Nauru’s interest in hosting a processing centre. The Nauru president has said that he is open to signing the UN Convention on Refugees. Opposition leader Tony Abbott says if the Government was fair dinkum about offshore processing, it would reopen Nauru’s existing detention centre. Australia’s Acting High Commissioner in Fiji has left the country after the military government ordered her out. Sarah Roberts left her Fiji compound early this morning. Fiji’s accused Ms Roberts of interfering in international affairs. France has taken another step towards banning the burka. Lawmakers in the country’s lower house of parliament have passed a bill to outlaw full-length veils in public places. The proposed legislation still requires Senate approval. And the NRL club Melbourne Storm had breached the salary cap by 3.2 million dollars over four years according to an inquiry by club owners, News Limited. |
