LOS ANGELES, July 30 (Xinhua) -- American film and television actor Christopher Mayer, best known for his role as Vance Duke in the popular 1980s' television show "The Dukes of Hazzard," died at the age of 57, local media reported on Saturday. The actor, who also appeared in the 1997 Jim Carrey comedy "Liar Liar," died on July 23 of natural causes in Sherman Oaks near Los Angeles, Hollywood trade weekly magazine "Variety" reported.
Born in New York and raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Mayer first rose to fame on the CBS series "The Dukes of Hazzard" in the 1980s. He played the role of Duke in 1982-83 season for 19 episodes, along with another actor Byron Cherry, as the replacement of the previous heroes who were involved in a contract dispute.
The dark-haired Mayer later voiced the same character in an animated spinoff "The Dukes" aired on CBS in 1983 and guested on the TV series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
He was married to three actresses, and the three marriages all ended in divorce. He was survived by three daughters, a grandson and a granddaughter. |
