Julia Gillard has signaled she's thinking about introducing a flood levy to pay for the massive reconstruction bill. The Prime Minister says the Government is committed to keeping to its timetable to return the budget to surplus. She says tough spending cuts will have to be made. The Opposition, meanwhile, says a levy will hurt families and small businesses. Victoria's floods are making their relentless way across the state. In the west, the small community of Jeparit, which is downstream of Dimboola, is the next in line. Residents fear its levees may fail and they have been very busy sandbagging.
Firefighters are battling bushfires threatening Perth's southern suburbs. Four homes in Kwinana have been slightly damaged. Firefighters have contained but not controlled a fire (near) in nearby Parmelia. The blaze broke out yesterday and is believed to have been deliberately lit.
The Productivity Commission is urging the Federal Government to radically overhaul the aged care sector. It wants caps on residential bed numbers removed and a means test for those who can pay. The commission's draft report says the current system is plagued by delays, inequalities and inefficiencies. |
