 The United Nations human rights commissioner has slammed the Federal Government's plan to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia. Navi Pillay has called for safeguards to protect against torture under the proposed scheme. She says Malaysia has a poor human rights record and assurances that it will comply with international standards are not sufficient.

 
US President Barack Obama is meeting with Britain's prime minister in London. Barack Obama and David Cameron are expected to discuss Afghanistan, Libya and the world economy. Earlier, Barack and Michelle Obama were treated to a star-studded banquet at Buckingham Palace. Mr Obama is only the second sitting US president to be accorded the full honours of a state visit to Britain.
 
Industrial action by the Maritime Union is set to spread to Fremantle tomorrow. The rift over fair pay and conditions for waterfront workers today paralysed ports in Sydney and Brisbane. Stevedore company Patrick says the union's demands will lead to a big hike in its overall spending.
 
And the New South Wales Supreme Court has heard a chance encounter between two rival bikies led to a fatal brawl at Sydney airport. The brother of the Hells Angel was bashed and kicked to death during the fight two years ago.
