The Prime Minister says a massive takeover deal for a Queensland coal company is proof the carbon tax will not cripple the coal industry. The US company, Peabody Energy, has tabled an offer for Macarthur Coal, valuing it at just under $5 billion. The deal is the biggest ever for an Australian coal company. Authorities confirmed another horse has died from the hendra virus, this time in far north Queensland. Biosecurity Queensland says an animal that died yesterday morning on a property west of Cairns has tested positive to the disease. There’ve been five other outbreaks of hendra in the past three weeks, three in south-east Queensland and two in New South Wales.
Fresh phone hacking allegations are threatening to sink Rupert Murdoch’s bid to expand his British media empire. New reports say investigators working for the Sun and the Sunday Times targeted former Prime Minister Gordon Brown for a decade. The British government has referred Mr Murdoch’s bid to take over BSkyB to the Competition Commission.
Health warnings will appear on beer, wine and spirit products after the drinks industry agreed to a voluntary labelling scheme. Labels will now include messages that alcohol should not be drunk by children, can cause self-harm and should be avoided by pregnant women. The warnings have been issued by DrinkWise Australia.
