The phone hacking scandal engulfing the UK media has attracted another high-profile name. Heather Mills, the ex-wife of Beatle Paul McCartney, says a senior journalist from the Mirror admitted to hacking into her phone and listening to her voicemail in 2001. She told a British news programme that a journalist from the paper rang her and quoted parts of a voicemail left by her then boyfriend Sir Paul McCartney. The Mirror Group rejects the accusation and says its staff work within the law. US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is set to receive a special Oscar recognising her tireless humanitarian work. The 57-year-old personality, who retired from her globally screened TV show this year, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at a dinner in November. Previous recipients have included Bob Hope, Gregory Peck and Elizabeth Taylor. The Academy described Winfrey as one of the most influential figures in entertainment and philanthropy. And staff at gaming giant Nintendo have gone to drastic measures to prevent "game over". Company executives have slashed their own salaries as well as the price of the Nintendo 3DS console after the company posted its first-ever operating loss. The poor result has been blamed on mediocre game titles and unexciting technology. |
